The latest hydrovar X controls the speed of a standard IEC motor by converting the fixed voltage and frequency from the power supply line. 

Variable-frequency drive uses a soft start and gradually ramps up the motor to operating speed. This lessens mechanical and electrical stress on the motor system and can reduce maintenance and repair costs and extend motor life.
